SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Three takeaways from the Bears’ 38-13 loss to the 49ers on Sunday:
Seven
The Bears lost their seventh consecutive game Sunday, a streak half as long as the franchise record they set from 2022-23 and their sixth-longest since the merger. The Bears totaled 4 yards in the first half under interim coach Thomas Brown, their fewest since at least 1991. The Bears were outgained by 302 yards, the largest first-half margin in the NFL this year.
No defense
Firing Eberflus left the Bears without their defensive coordinator. Eric Washington’s debut was more toothless than any game Eberflus called all year. The Bears gave up more points in the first three quarters plus three seconds than they did in any full game this season.
Not in a rush
Quarterback Caleb Williams struggled in the first half — but so did his run game. The Bears ran four times for seven yards — all by D’Andre Swift — in the first two quarters. It was their worst rushing performance in the first half since a 2017 loss to the Eagles.
A 38-13 blowout loss to the 49ers looked like the same sad movie.
Shanahan was clear as could be that he has no intention of orchestrating a trade to the Bears.
Thomas Brown’s debut ended in a 38-13 loss.
